A special shopping trip at The Trafford Centre

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is hitting the shops for something extra special this weekend in a bid to recruit new special constables.

As part of National Specials Weekend, a recruitment event will be held at The Trafford Centre on Friday 5 to Sunday 7 February to give people the chance to find out about becoming a special constable.

Special constables are volunteers who give up their free time to work alongside full-time police officers to detect and investigate crime, patrol hotspot areas and build relationships with the local community. They normally work a minimum of four hours per week.

GMP Chief Constable Peter Fahy the ACPO Lead on the Special Constabulary said: “Special constables provide us with a fantastic extra police resource to reassure communities and keep local streets safe.

"For anyone who has some spare time, it is a great way to give something back to your community, develop new skills and for those interested in becoming a regular police officer, there is no better way of getting an insight into policing. I would encourage anybody thinking of joining to come along for a chat."

Officers from GMP, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire constabularies will also be outside The Trafford Centre taking part in a road policing initiative. An exhibition vehicle will be situated outside the Great Hall entrance where officers will provide road safety advice to members of the public.

Anyone interested in joining the special constabulary or would like further information please ring 0161 856 2144 or email special.constabulary@gmp.police.uk.
