Arrests

Although fewer persons were arrested in 2006/07 than in 2005/06, those detainees were arrested for a greater number of offences in total. This reflects the improved and more efficient delivery of operational policing:

• In 2005/2006 110,732 persons were arrested for a total of 262,097 offences
• In 2006/2007 108,816 persons were arrested for a total of 277,072 offences

A total of 108,816 arrests were recorded during 2006/07. Of all detainees:

• 83.5% were White or White British;
• 6.0% were Asian or Asian British;
• 4.7% were Black or Black British;
• 3.2% were of Mixed Ethnicity;
• 1.2% were from Chinese or Other Ethnic Group; and
• for 1%, ethnicity was not recorded.
• 82.6% were male
• 62.9% were aged 21 or over

The ethnicity, gender and age profiles of detainees did not change noticeably between 2005/06 and 2006/07.
