Tackling Domestic Abuse in Greater Manchester
Domestic abuse is happening every day, in every part of the UK. Every minute in the UK, the police receive a call from the public for assistance for domestic abuse. The results can be horrific: from loss of confidence or cuts and bruises to complete breakdowns and, in the worst cases, murder.
The Greater Manchester Police force is committed to protecting the lives of both adult and child victims of domestic abuse, to investigate all reports effectively, to bring offenders to justice and hold them accountable for their actions and to adopt a proactive multi-agency approach in order to prevent and reduce domestic abuse. These pages have been designed to give as much information as possible about the work GMP is doing to combat domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse can take the form of psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional abuse and can affect anybody, regardless of gender, age, race, sexuality or social background. It is not acceptable in any circumstance.
The Force area is split into geographical divisions and each division has its own Public Protection Investigation Unit with trained and experienced Specialist Domestic Abuse Investigators, who are dedicated to tackling the issue. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, or are worried about a friend or family member, you can contact your local office for help, advice and support.

National Centre for Domestic Violence
GMP has also joined forces with the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV) to provide victims of domestic abuse with an additional service to help them obtain civil injunctions against their partner. The NCDV also offers free advice and assistance in relation to obtaining a Forced Marriage Protection Order.
The NCDV is a charity offering a telephone-based service that provides people with access to fast and free legal advice and support 24 hours a day. Its services include:
- Helping victims get an injunction, which is a court order that prohibits an abuser from using or threatening violence, harassing, pestering or intimidating the victim.
- Helping forced marriage victims get a Forced Marriage Protection Order. This can be used to prevent a forced marriage occurring, stop intimidation and violence, reveal the whereabouts of a person, stop somebody from being taken abroad, hand over passports and more.
- Usually orders are obtained within 24 hours. This quickly protects victims from further abuse and could save lives.
Anyone who would like to access the services offered by the NCDV can call: 0844 8044 999 or text: NCDV to 60777.
