Neighbourhood action helps make East Bury a cleaner, safer place

Residents joined forces with police, fire officers and council street cleaners as part of a scheme designed to make East Bury a safer and more pleasant place to live.

A special week of Neighbourhood Action saw children from Holy Trinity Primary School help specialist cleaners from Irwell Valley Housing remove unsightly graffiti from walls and volunteers from the Bury Women’s Asian Centre take part in a special litter pick in the East Street area.

Bury’s Waste Management Team also removed potentially hazardous litter, including used hypodermic needles, from waste ground and clear up rubbish - which could have posed a fire risk - from back alleys.

As a result of the patrols, a number of residents are to receive enforcement notices requiring them to clean up their back yards and, in future, Environmental Health Officers and PCSOs will carry out joint patrols to ensure that streets remain clean and anyone found dropping litter or flytipping are brought to book.

The week of action was organised by the Team Bury partnership and saw police officers give out crime prevention packs to residents, fire officers carry out free home safety checks and the Benefits Agency hold a special drop-in advice clinic at the Mosses Centre.

Inspector Charlotte Cadden of the Bury East NPT said: “The initiative more than achieved its aim of improving the local environment, offering public reassurance and further developing community pride in East Bury.

“We had some fantastic feedback from local residents about the initiative which is an excellent example of the positive results that can be achieved through good partnership working. I am sure the activity undertaken in the area will have a beneficial long-term impact on the quality of residents’ lives.”

Councillor Sam Cohen Executive Member for Safe and Secure Communities said: "According to recent statistics, the most important things that make people feel that an area is a good place to live are low levels of crime and clean streets. This is why we are dedicating such a high level of resource into these areas. It is really important to us that we keep Bury a safe place to live."
