Workforce Composition

GMP employs a total of 519 Minority Ethnic people (4.0% of the workforce – an increase from 3.8% since 2006/07, and from 3.6% since 2005/06).

  • 336 Minority Ethnic police officers – an increase of 20 officers since 2006/07, and a total increase of 27 since 2005/06;
  • 183 Minority Ethnic police staff – an increase of 16 staff since 2006/07, and a total increase of 37 since 2005/06;

6.7% of the PCSOs recruited during 2007/08 were from Minority Ethnic groups – 3 Black or Black British, 2 Asian or Asian British, 2 from Chinese or Other Ethnic Groups, and 1 of Mixed Ethnicity.

In addition, 21 (6.0%) of GMP’s 350 volunteer Special Constables are from Minority Ethnic groups – an increase from 5.5% since 2006/07.

GMP employs a total of 4,848 females – an increase of 3.5% (166) since 2006/07.

  • 2,057 (25.4%) of GMP’s police officers are female – an increase of 4.3% (85) since 2006/07
  • 47 (39.5%) of GMP’s PCSO recruits during 2007/08 were female.
  • In addition, 119 (34.0%) of GMP’s Special Constables are female.

Police Officer Recruitment

GMP had a target in 2007/08 for 10% of all police officers joining the force to be from Minority Ethnic groups. Minority Ethnic persons actually made up:

  • 7.1% (353) of applicants for police officer posts;
  • 7.1% (198) of police assessment centre attendees
  • 5.2% (22) of police officer recruits.

In common with most other forces, the increase in Minority Ethnic employees represents slow but steady progress. While increasing the diversity of the workforce is a complex challenge bearing in mind the requirement for all police officers to begin their careers as police constables and the time it takes to progress through the ranks, GMP’s Positive Action Team is helping to increase the number of job applicants from under-represented groups. The team attends recruitment and community events to promote career opportunities within GMP, delivers information evenings and workshops about applying for jobs within the Force, and offers one-to-one support, advice and guidance throughout the recruitment process.

Police Officer Promotions

During 2007/08, 2 Minority Ethnic police officers were promoted to Sergeant rank, 3 to Inspector rank, and 1 to Chief Inspector rank. The highest ranking Minority Ethnic police officers are Superintendents (x2).

20 female police officers were promoted to Sergeant rank, 9 to Inspector rank, and 10 to Chief Inspector rank. Across all ranks, the promotion pass rates were higher for females than for males. GMP has 1 female Assistant Chief Constable and 3 Chief Superintendents.
