Police are warning street drinkers in Trafford that they face prosecution if they refuse to surrender alcohol to an officer.
Following incidents at high-profile sporting events at the start of 2010, officers are keen to clamp down on people drinking in the street, especially in and around the Old Trafford area on match days.
All urban areas of the borough are covered by a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO), which means that officers have the power to stop people and confiscate alcohol.
If anyone refuses to hand over alcohol to an officer they could face a £50 fine or arrest and a night in the police cells.

Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts, Divisional Commander for Greater Manchester Police’s Trafford Division said: “We will not tolerate alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in public as it is upsetting to the majority of law-abiding people.
“We are committed to making Trafford a better place to live and enforcing this DPPO is yet another example of how we are working to robustly tackle drink-related issues when they arise.”
