Enquiries about horses
Greater Manchester Police finds its horses from a variety of sources.
Suitable horses are also donated. If you have a horse that may be suitable it ideally needs having the following (but it can depend on circumstances) :
- aged between six and 10
- between 16.1 hands and 17.2 hands
- have a laid back temperament for example Irish Draught type
- be of a solid build with good clean legs and feet (this is a real essential)
- good on the roads and with traffic
- be able to walk, trot and canter and have knowledge of lateral work
If your horse meets those criteria then contact the mounted unit by e-mail on 0161 856 1793.
What happens when they finish work?
All police horses suitable for re-homing go to the International League for the Protection of Horses. If you want to offer a hope to a retired police horse you can visit the ILPH Website.
Some horses are not able to be re-homed when they retire and the mounted unit have been supported by the The Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire. The Home of Rest for Horses caters for the retirement needs of over 100 horses, donkeys and ponies.
