Small ports

The North West CTU region comprises of the five North West police forces, Cheshire Constabulary, Cumbria Constabulary, Greater Manchester Police, Lancashire Constabulary and Merseyside Police.

Officers and staff from within the North West Counter Terrorism Unit (NWCTU) support forces across the region, and nationally, by providing specialist skills and expertise when faced with a terrorist threat.

As part of our ongoing work to improve border security, officers from the region’s five Small Ports Units have forged closer working relationships with key maritime and aviation partners, in particular the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) regarding immigration and customs matters. However, a wide array of additional non law enforcement and commercial partners exist such as the Armed Forces, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, National Air Traffic Services (NATS), to name but a few.

Their main priority is to gather intelligence to counter the threat to National Security from terrorism (International and Northern Irish Related Terrorism). This also allows us to support wider policing priorities such as gathering intelligence on Serious and Organised crime.

The individual Small Port Units are responsible for coverage of non-designated airports / airfields and seaports within their geographical force boundaries. In the more rural port locations, the public, as always, are relied upon to play a large part in the protection of their own communities by reporting suspicious incidents to the police and in this regard the Small Ports Units will liase with our community-based colleagues.

Maritime Maritime - One of the responsibilities of the Ports Units is to police not just the designated sea ports, Port of Liverpool, Heysham and Fleetwood but also all the marinas and docking facilities along the North West Coast line including the Manchester Ship Canal and liaise with our marine communities in relation to the potential terrorist threat to our county. Our area of responsibility extends from the Dee Estuary, Cheshire to the Solway Firth, Cumbria. This section includes information on Project Kraken.

Aviation Aviation - A major responsibility for the Ports Unit is the policing of the regions designated airports, Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and Carlisle Airports but all non-designated airfields and helicopter landing pads within the region, and to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation but in particular the Terrorism legislation.
