Police Community Support Officers

PCSO High Visibility Jacket

Welcome and thank you for your interest in joining us as a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO). Unfortunately, we are not currently recruiting for PCSOs within Greater Manchester but will update this site with further details when we are next advertising for the candidate pool.

In the meantime, further information on the role, training and application process can be found on these pages.

Background

Police Community Support Officers were introduced by the Police Reform Act 2002 to provide an increased police presence on the streets. The first Officers took to the streets in September of that year in a pilot scheme across six forces. The scheme's success saw it rolled out across the whole of England and Wales as well as the British Transport Police.

Although the role is quite new, PCSOs have already made a significant impact. Because they focus on the needs of the community, they help GMP to engage with people, providing the reassurance of a uniformed presence. As part of the wider police "family," they've provided invaluable support to regular Officers and a friendly face for the public, creating safer and more confident neighbourhoods and freeing resources to deal with more serious crimes.
