Benefits of Working for GMP
Learning and Development
GMP aims to provide suitable Learning and Development opportunities for all staff to enhance their individual effectiveness at work. Therefore GMP is committed to providing both internal and external training courses to help with work and career development. Through the Investor in People standard, GMP aims to provide learning and development opportunities to meet service needs and personal growth, as identified through the performance appraisal process.
Learning and Development Branch
Based over four sites the branch provides training in the following areas: Driving, Management Development, Simulations, Analysis training, Communications and Specialist Systems, Diversity and Audio Visual Aids. A complete course catalogue is available on the branch intranet page.
Departmental Training Courses
Various branches run courses such as Finance System training (Oracle), NSPIS HR training, Crime Scene Investigation, Fingerprints or Crime Input unit training. Details of these are available through your Divisional/Branch HR Manager or Training Plan Co-ordinator.
Further Education Funding Scheme
One of the aims of GMP is to work towards a systematic programme of training which will enable officers to be thoroughly trained, both for their existing role and for career development purposes.
The Further Education Funding Scheme provides assistance to individuals who wish to study towards a relevant external course of further education which leads to a recognised qualification.
This assistance can take the form of up to £3,000 towards course fees, or paid time off for study
Secondments/Work Shadowing/Mentoring
Secondment opportunities (internally or externally) offer the chance to gain additional work experience, or provide training in order that a specific project can be completed. Secondments may also be undertaken to cover posts of a temporary nature. For mentee and mentor opportunities contact the Career Development Unit in Personnel Branch - now Leadership and Development Unit.
External Training
Each branch and division has a budget for external training, conferences and seminars. These need to be approved by line managers.
Prospects Scheme
Prospects is a leadership programme designed to develop the skills of officers and police staff who want to enhance their chances of promotion or career progression. By entering the programme, successful applicants will undertake a year of increased learning and development. Prospects is designed to appeal to those people within GMP who have the drive, commitment and clear ability to progress.
