Work-Life Balance

Bookmark and Share

At GMP, we understand that people increasingly face the challenge of balancing the demands of their jobs and their personal responsibilities.

Work-Life Balance policies and benefits are aimed not only at people who have carer responsibilities for children, relatives or dependants, but all members of staff who wish to create a better balance in differing aspects of their lives.

These policies are aimed at staff to help them more easily balance their work and domestic commitments.

Flexible Working

GMP offers a range of flexible working arrangements, in line with statutory requirements to help staff combine their domestic and work responsibilities.   To be eligible to make a request you need to have parental responsibility for a child under six or a disabled child under 18.  Not all types of flexible working can be accommodated in every role within GMP, but every effort will be made to agree a request for flexible working where possible.  All decisions relating to such requests will therefore need to take into account the nature of the job and the requirements of the organisation.

Flexitime

Flexitime is a system of working that gives employees the facility to vary their working hours in a limited way in order to meet the particular day-to-day requirements of the job and also their personal needs.  The concept is simple - there are two types of time:

Core Time - the main part of the day when everyone must be in; and

Flexible Time - at the beginning and end of the day, and at lunchtime, when staff can choose their hours of arrival and departure in line with the flexitime scheme that applies

Staff with flexitime credit are also able to use the credit built up to take flexi
leave

Job Share

Job sharing is where one full time post is shared by two members of staff, usually on the basis of 50% of the hours each.  The scheme is applicable to most jobs unless, exceptionally, there are aspects of the duties, responsibilities or working arrangements which would render job share arrangements operationally impractical.

Voluntary Reduced Hours

Any full time police staff member can apply to reduce their working hours, and part time staff can apply to further reduce their hours under this scheme. Although the emphasis is on the individual putting forward a case for reduced hours, the organisational needs obviously have to be a consideration.

Career Breaks

The Career Break Scheme is a flexible option which enables staff to take time off work while GMP retains their skills and experience in the longer term.

The scheme allows for a period of unpaid leave of between one and five years duration, to enable employees to care for children, relatives or dependants, undertake full time study, or do voluntary work at home or abroad.

Maternity, Paternity, Parental  and Adoption Leave

Maternity leave of up to 52 weeks can be taken, with pay for up to 26 weeks, subject to length of service criteria and personal choice.

New fathers can take two weeks paternity leave subject to qualifying service.

Parents with children under the age of five have the right to request unpaid parental leave of up to four weeks every year for each child.

GMP's adoption leave policy for police staff generally mirrors the maternity leave provisions.

Special and Dependents Leave

GMP recognises that you may need to take time off work to deal with dependants emergencies and bereavement.  Please see the Family and Dependants Leave Policy for further information.
