At around 5.30pm on Wednesday 1 September police were called to reports of a collision on Talbot Road in Hyde.
Emergency services attended and enquiries established a Toyota Rav4 had been travelling in an easterly direction along Talbot Road towards the junction of Acresfield Road.
At the same time, a 12-year-old boy was riding a scooter in the opposite direction along Talbot Rod when both he and the Toyota were involved in a collision with one another.
The boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his head and chest. He remains there in a life threatening condition.
No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
Officers are looking to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information or dash-cam footage that could assist their investigation.
