Shortly before 5pm today (Sunday 19 December), police were called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Edenfield Road, Rochdale.
The car - believed to be a grey Mercedes or Audi - failed to stop at the scene.
Emergency services attended and a woman - believed to be in her 60's - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
No arrests have been made and Edenfield Road is currently closed whilst police carry out initial enquiries.
Chief Inspector Bob Cantrell, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Our thoughts remain firmly with the woman's loved ones at this difficult time.
"If anyone witnessed this collision and has any dashcam footage or information about the grey car please get in touch with police as soon as possible. It is believed the grey car will have significant damage to the front end."
