Officers were called at around 6.10am on Thursday 4th November to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on Bury New Road, Whitefield.
Emergency services attended and enquiries established a silver BMW 320D crossed the central reservation onto the opposing carriageway before colliding with a black Renault Megane.
The BMW was then involved in a further collision with a black Ford Transit. Both the driver and front seat passenger of the BMW failed to remain at the scene and fled on foot.
Sadly a passenger of the BMW - a 31 year-old man - was taken to hospital but sadly died later that morning. His next of kin have been informed.
Two other passengers of the BMW were taken to hospital. One man aged 48, remains there with serious injuries and the other, aged 30, was treated for minor injuries.
Enquiries are ongoing and one arrest has been made.
Police Sergeant Andrew Page of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a serious collision in which a man has very sadly lost his life and another remains in a serious condition in hospital.
"Our enquiries are currently ongoing to ensure we establish the full circumstances of this collision and we're appealing to anyone who may have been in the area at the time, particularly those with dash-cam footage, to come forward and speak to police.
