John Rimmer, 54, was admitted to hospital around 8.40pm on Wednesday 4 September 2019 with head injuries, and sadly passed away on Friday 6 September 2019.
A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for questioning.
Officers are continuing to appeal for information or anyone with dash-cam footage to get in touch.
Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This was a violent incident that has left John’s family and friends devastated. Our thoughts are very much with his family at this difficult time.
“Whilst we have a man in custody, our enquiries are very much ongoing.
“We know the answers lie within the community, and I would urge anyone who has any information to do the right thing and come forward to police, so that we can give John’s family the answers they deserve.”
