Officers have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with an assault in Heaton Norris, Stockport.
At around 8.10pm on Wednesday 5 May 2021 the victim - a man in his 40s - was approached by a man who head-butted him outside the New Tai Wah takeaway on Belmont Street, causing the victim to fall backwards and bang his head on the ground.
Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital with facial injuries and a serious head injury which required lifesaving surgery. He has since been discharged from hospital.
No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
Detective Constable Joel Massender, of GMP's Stockport district, said: "This is a shocking assault which has resulted in a man requiring surgery for life threatening injuries.
"We will not tolerate behaviour such as this in Greater Manchester and have been following a number of lines of enquiry to identify the offender and ensure he faces justice.
"If anyone was in the area at the time or has any information that could help police with their investigation please do not hesitate to get in touch."
