Officers were called just before 11.45pm on Saturday 19 June 2021 to Hurst Cross, Ashton-under-Lyne to a report of a collision at the junction with Kings Road.
Emergency services attended and enquiries established a white Mercedes Sprinter van had been travelling along Lees Road before continuing onto Hurst Cross.
The van continued onto Hurst Cross where it was involved in a collision with a pedestrian, who had been crossing the road.
The van failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Park Road, Stalybridge.
The pedestrian - a 56-year-old man - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed.
A 29-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning.
Enquiries are ongoing.
Sergeant Matt Waggett of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Tragically, a man has lost his life as a result of this collision and our thoughts are very much with his family and loved ones as they begin to process this horrendous news. They are currently receiving support from specialist officers.
"We currently have one man in custody in connection with this collision but we're appealing to anyone with information to come forward and speak with us to assist our investigation. The van involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene so we're particularly keen to speak with anyone who witnessed a white Mercedes Sprinter in the area at the time."
