At around 1.30pm on Sunday 16 May, police in Stretford spotted a suspicious Ford Fiesta and signalled for it to stop, which it initially did before making off in the opposite direction.
Officers attempted to change direction before discovering a short time later that the Ford had collided into two other vehicles on Urmston Lane.
The driver of the Ford - an 18-year-old man - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been informed.
The occupants of a second vehicle suffered minor injuries.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family who had the most tragic news given to them yesterday.
"We have referred this incident to the IOPC due to the police contact in the moments before this terrible incident, and we will do all we can to support any subsequent investigation."
