A family have paid tribute to a "caring" and "doting father" who died in Bolton last week.

At around 1.30am on Thursday 2 September, officers were called to reports a man was unconscious in a bar on Bradshawgate, Bolton.

Enquiries established the 36-year-old man - who has since been formally identified as Robert Smethurst - had been assaulted and was treated by police officers and NWAS paramedics at the scene.

He was then taken to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, sadly died.

Paying tribute to Robert, his family described him as a "selfless human" who was "always helping where he could".

His wife, Amanda, said: "There are no words that could possibly do my husband and his legacy justice.

"First and foremost, Rob was adored by our daughters Megan, Olivia and all of their friends.

"They always said he was "such a cool Dad". Anything they needed he provided. Anything they were doing, he supported. He was a doting father and he was so proud of his babies.

"Rob was the most enthusiastic man with an outrageously loud laugh. Full of energy. Full of positivity. Full of fun.

"He was the life and soul of every party. His presence simply lit up the room. He was always organising good times with his family and friends - camping, caravanning and most importantly - fishing!

"Through the difficult times he was caring, supportive and inspiring. Always encouraging those around him to build them up.

"Always there to offer advice and guidance without judgement, he just wanted to help those he loved be the very best version of themselves. Everybody who knows Rob has a story of how he influenced them at some point in their lives. Such a selfless human. Always helping where he could and always giving what he had.

"The world is a much duller place without you in it, Rob. Anybody who knew you will understand the gut wrenching pain that is rippling through our lives.

"You worked so hard to build a life for your family to be proud of. And proud of you we are. So unbelievably proud!

"I will miss you always, forever your loving wife."

Robert Owen Greenhalgh (27/7/1990), of no fixed abode, is charged with murder and section 47 assault. He is due to appear at Manchester Crown Square today (7 September 2021).
