36-year-old man from Manchester jailed for 3 Years for Controlling and Coercive Behaviour

Mohammed Aamer Imtiaz (07/08/1986) was arrested 19 January 2022 for engaging in a course of controlling and coercive behaviour, which he inflicted on his ex-partner and her family.

Evidence was found where Mohammed Imtiaz threatened to disfigure his ex-partner with acid.

Mohammed Imtiaz had been tracking his victim’s movements, sending malicious messages, and threatening to have his ex-partner raped.

A strict relationship contract had been constructed, where Mohammed directed his ex as to what she could wear, where she could go and who she could meet.

Over the course of 2021, Mohammed sought to intimidate his ex-partner’s family, isolating her from her friends and threatened to steal her grandfather’s ashes.

Ultimately, this amounted to a targeted campaign of abusive, violent and threatening conduct that left the victim and her family in fear of their lives.

Mohammed Imtiaz’s victims said: “Mohammed has made me feel so paranoid and I cannot rest easily because of what he has done to me and my family.

“I have moved address because of him and what he has done. I still feel as though my car has a tracker in it and that he is waiting to get out and see where I am again.

“Every time I get in from work, I am petrified that he is waiting in the bushes, I always make sure to always lock the door, and that’s my thoughts even now.”

On Thursday 15 December 2022, at Bolton Crown Court, Mohammed Imtiaz has been sentenced to serve a three-year custodial sentence for Controlling and Coercive Behaviour.

The victim and her immediate family have all been granted indefinite restraining orders, to protect them from Mohammed Imtiaz.

Detective Inspector Mark Astbury of City of Manchester District said: “Firstly, I'd like to thank the victim and their family for their unwavering cooperation in this investigation and I hope this helps bring some form of closure after the investigation for this overall terrible ordeal for the victims.

“This was a complex investigation that required the forensic and digital analysis of multiple sets of data, from telecommunications to tracking devices.

“The victim was coerced over several years and after the relationship ended the abuse continued to grow and inflict upon her closest family members and caused such distress and trauma and will no doubt leave a damaging and haunting impact on the victims.

“I can only hope that today’s sentencing can bring the victims some form of comfort and allow the victims to be able to build their lives back after this shocking and controlling abuse.

“This sentencing should send a clear message that domestic abuse and controlling behaviour is absolutely not acceptable and anyone who engages in this criminal behaviour will be brought to justice to face the consequences for their actions."
