Advice to help drivers stay safe during the wintry weather

Amid warnings of ice, GMP advises motorists on vehicle and road safety. 

Greater Manchester Police is advising motorists how to keep their vehicles and road users safe, as yellow weather warnings of ice remain in place across Greater Manchester this weekend. 

Vehicles left unattended with their engines running are an easy target for opportunistic criminals so owners should remain with their vehicles, unless the engines are off and the doors are locked. 

Ice increases braking distances so speed limits and traffic lights should be paid close attention to. 

Chief Inspector Michael Parker, of GMP’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “There is an increase in road traffic collisions at this time of year and ice is just one of several reasons for this. 

“Road traffic collisions can have devastating consequences and no-one wants to deliver or receive bad news at any time, never mind during the festive season. 

“We are appealing to motorists to drive safely - stick to the speed limit, leave plenty of time to stop at red lights and junctions, and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. 

“Our officers will remain on the roads throughout the festive period - proactively identifying anyone who is putting road users at risk and ensuring appropriate action is taken.”
