Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we’re reminiscing with some of our officers whose achievements and service have been marked by the Queen’s Birthday or New Years Honours List.
Special Constabulary Chief Officer Mike Walmsley was awarded an MBE in the 2020 New Year Honours.
Mike was recognised for services to policing. Prior to this, GMP's Special Constabularly was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2018. At the time, they were only the second special constabularly to have recieved it.
SC Chief Officer Walmsley MBE DL said: “It was a very proud moment when I found out that our Specials had received a Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
“To have an award from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II meant so much to our officers who dedicate so much of their time to the communities of Greater Manchester.
"To then receive an MBE was a very humbling experience and has inspired me to do more."
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry, who joined the force in 1995 and is currently portfolio holder for Specialist Operations, was awarded The Queen’s Police Medal in the 2021 Birthday Honours List.
The Queen's Police Medal is awarded for distinguished service.
ACC Chaudhry QPM said: “I was and still am immensely proud to have been awarded The Queen’s Police Medal. It is a continuous reminder to me of the strength of the work we do with our communities across Greater Manchester and also the significance of holding on to the importance of contributing to public service.
“From swearing the oath, I have been honoured to serve Queen and country and will now serve His Majesty King Charles III with the same commitment.”
