The section 60 powers began at 9:30pm yesterday evening (Saturday 2 September) and ran until 9:30pm this evening (Sunday 3 September 2023).

After review by Greater Manchester Police, these stop and search powers have been extended a further 12 hours until 9:30am on Monday 4 September 2023.

The Section 60 has been implemented to assist GMP officers in preventing serious violence following a section 18 assault last night at a premises in Manchester.

These temporary additional powers will allow officers to stop and search people in the South Manchester and Trafford areas shown in the attached map until 9:30am tomorrow morning (Monday 4 September 2023).

There will be further consideration around any necessity for the use of this legislation on Monday the 4th September 2023.

Roads included within this Section 60 perimeter are Mancunian way, Princess Road, Bridgewater way, Park way, Chester Road, M60, Princess Road.

Superintendent Richard Warden of GMP said: “After an extensive review of our intelligence and following our positive interventions in the local community, we have decided to extend these stop search powers until tomorrow morning to ensure the public remain safe from any potential violence.

“We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to residents, but rest assured these powers are in place to allow us to further protect the local communities in Trafford, Hulme and Chorlton.

"By enforcing the Section 60 in this area, we will work with the local communities to minimise any violent behaviour in your area and prevent any further violence going forward.

"Our main priority is to keep the public safe and we have deployed extra officers around the local area to help provide reassurance.

"If you have any concerns about crime in your area, please talk to our officers out on patrol as they are there to help and offer you reassurance and work with you to help build a safer community.”
