GMP's Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit successfully end pursuit on M60

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit successfully brought a suspected cloned car to a halt during a pursuit on the M60 this afternoon.

At around 1.30pm, officers from GMP's TVIU began to covertly follow a car which was suspected of displaying cloned registration plates in the Stockport area.

A short time later, the car entered the M60 motorway, failed to stop for the officers and then attempted to drive the wrong way along the motorway in a bid to escape.

The specialist officers implemented a successful tactical contact to bring the car to a stop, preventing potentially serious harm to innocent members of the public using the motorway at the time.

One man aged 18 was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, possession of drugs and possession of an offensive weapon.

Another man aged 24 was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of drugs.

They both remain in custody for questioning.

Inspector Daniel Kabal, from Greater Manchester Police’s Specialist Operations Branch said: “Our officers acted quickly and decisively to bring this pursuit to a stop to protect the public.  The actions of the vehicle were extremely dangerous and could have had fatal consequences.  Thankfully, no members of the public were injured and I am pleased to say that my officers are safe too.  

“The TVIU remain committed at tackling serious and organised criminality within Greater Manchester and we will not hesitate to use reasonable and proportionate force to keep the public safe and take dangerous criminals off the streets.

"I appreciate that a number of commuters will have been temporarily delayed due to this incident and I would like to thank them for their patience and understanding."
