Ibraheem Ali’s killer receives life in prison following fatal stabbing

Akbar Kafeel Khan (16/05/2002) of Hyde Road in Gorton was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years at Bolton Crown Court on Wednesday 9 August 2023 after being found guilty of stabbing Ibraheem in the neck outside a shop following a scuffle inside.

His sentencing follows two weeks of evidence whereby his claim of acting in self-defence was rejected by the jury.

He received two-years, to be served concurrently, for the possession of a bladed article.

Greater Manchester Police were called to a report of a stabbing outside Wayne’s Convenience Store, Stockport Road in Levenshulme at around 11:30pm on Sunday 22 January 2023.

Emergency services at the scene found a 19-year-old man had suffered a serious injury to his neck. He was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary where his condition was described as critical.

Careful analysis of CCTV showed a scuffle inside the shop which spilled outside whereby Khan who was brandishing a flick knife lunged at Ibraheem inflicting a catastrophic injury.

Khan fled the scene in his car and then set about disposing of evidence including the knife, his clothing and his car.

He was identified as the attacker very early on in the investigation, but it was clear that his arrest was not going to be easy. Family members were placed under surveillance who led police to an address on Dorstone Close, Newton Heath and shortly before 7pm on Monday 23 January Khan was arrested.

The following day he was charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

Sadly, the victim Ibraheem Ali died of his injuries a week later after fighting for his life and Khan’s charge was amended to murder in March 2023.

His partner at the time was found not guilty of assisting an offender in the same trial.

In a tribute to Ibraheem, shortly after the incident, his mother and family lovingly stated: “Ibraheem was the light of my soul. Such a caring soul. A kind of son I wish all mothers to have. This unexpected loss is difficult to comprehend. I hope and pray no mother has to go through this. My baby boy is no more, I will cherish his memories forever.

“Ibraheem was a beautiful, loving caring and kind young man. Always smiling, respectful and offering to help others around him. This is a tragic loss that has affected all the community. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.”

Senior Investigating Officer, Phil Reade said; "This was a senseless murder, Khan had choices that night, but chose to use the knife he carried in his pocket to fatally stab Ibraheem who was unarmed and defenceless to his wicked actions.

"Throughout the trial Khan lacked the courage to face up to what he did, prolonging the distress to Ibraheem’s family.

"They have had their loving son taken from them and continue to grieve at his loss, but I hope that this conviction offers them some comfort."
