Two men jailed following death of man in hit-and-run in 2021

Two men have been jailed following the death of a man in a hit and run in Middleton in 2021.

Dylan Loasby (18/03/2003), of Dunwood Park Courts in Shaw, was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment on Wednesday 30 August 2023 at Minshull Street Crown Court after being found guilty of causing death by careless driving and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Karl Jones (02/02/1983), of Birch Hall Close in Oldham, was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment after being found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

On 31 October 2021, shortly after 9.10pm, Marius Tartar, 35, had left his home address to go to a local shop while walking his dog. On his way there, he was hit by a car being driven by Loasby on Hollin Lane.

Marius was transported to hospital where sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services and hospital staff, he died on 13 November 2021.

Loasby, who was uninsured and did not have a licence, failed to stop at the scene and did not attend a police station until 2 November where he was arrested.

Jones, the registered keeper of the car, allowed Loasby use of the car knowing he had no insurance, no licence and was driving it on false number plates, which he asked Loasby to dispose of following the collision, so that investigating officers would not link him with the vehicle.

Detective Constable Jack Gregory, from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Loasby should not have been behind the wheel of that car, and his decisions that night resulted in the death of a man who was simply out to walk his dog.

“This was entirely avoidable and I hope that Loasby takes his time behind bars to think about his actions. Likewise, Jones, who tried to frustrate this investigation, is now rightly too behind bars. I hope today’s sentencing sends a strong message to other drivers.

“Our thoughts remain with Marius' family today, and we hope that they continue to heal and find comfort.”
