Greater Manchester Police has taken part in Operation Calibre, a national week of intensified action tackling personal robbery.
The second annual week of action has seen a total of 27 arrests for robbery across Greater Manchester, whilst officers conducted hundreds of hours of highly visible patrols and gave out a number of ‘You’ve Been Robbed’ cards to members of the public who have had their phones on display whilst out and about providing the perfect opportunity for potential thieves, the cards have been used in a bid to nudge people into hiding their valuables and phones.
Chief Superintendent Ian Jones, force lead for neighbourhood crime, said: “We have always been dedicated to tackling neighbourhood offences and this national week of action for robbery we have completed provides us with a real opportunity to showcase the great work that officers do on a day-to-day basis across the force and provide preventative advice in and around the community to enable us to help people protect themselves and their property this season.
“During this festive period, we have seen a rise in robbery, not only personal robbery but also business premises being targeted.
“It is important whilst you are out enjoying your Christmas shopping and festivities that you keep yourself and your friends safe.
“Anyone can become a victim of robbery, and following some easy steps can make sure you do all you can to protect yourself from becoming a victim. For more crime prevention visit: Protect your phone | Greater Manchester Police (gmp.police.uk)
“Throughout the week, we have seen some really good results, but we want to be clear that our work does not stop here, we continue to focus heavily on robbery during the darker nights period and into the new year as this is where we see a rise in robberies. We have officers out and about in your communities, conducting highly visible patrols to deter potential offenders and reassure members of the public.
“Keep your mobile phone and valuables out of sight. If you’re using your mobile phone whilst walking around, it’s more likely to be snatched from your hand as you’re not paying attention to your surroundings, so look around you.
Finally, if you’re threatened with violence, don’t risk your life. Property can always be replaced but you can’t, if you are in danger call 999 and if you see anybody acting suspicious, then please report this to us either by calling 101, or using the LiveChat facility on gmp.police.uk, we take reports of this nature incredibly seriously.” Can we put something on here about recording their phones or tablets on NMPR.
