At around 7:15pm last night (Monday 16 January) Greater Manchester Police received reports of a serious road traffic collision between two vehicles on the M66 northbound.
Emergency services attended and a man in his 30s was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene and assisted officers with their investigation.
PC Karl Horner from GMPs Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Officers and emergency services worked tirelessly to try and clear the scene and create a safe route for passengers.
"We are aware that the incident caused significant delays and I would like to thank the public for their patience.
"We would also like to appeal to any witnesses of this accident, or anyone who has dash-cam footage and was driving on the M66 northbound minutes before the incident, to come forward.
"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing. If you can help, then please contact our Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident 2976 of 16/01/2023.
"Information can also be reported online at www.gmp.police.uk. Alternatively, details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
