Greater Manchester Police has appointed a new inspector to oversee its key neighbourhood operation in south Manchester.
Inspector Gulzarien Khan has taken over the Manchester South Neighbourhood Policing Team from Inspector Anis Hakim that covers Chorlton, Didsbury and Whalley Range.
Successes so far include a 24% reduction in shoplifting and street patrols to combat drug dealing and anti-social behaviour.
Insp Khan has more than two decades in policing having spent over 19 years at the Met, where he worked in several roles including neighbourhood policing, response, transport, and covert policing.
He joined GMP in 2021 in the Custody Branch but has now moved to the neighbourhood teams.
Insp Khan said: “I feel my skills are better suited to neighbourhood policing and supervise a sergeant, six PCs and nine PCSOs.
“The team’s priorities include combating speeding, theft, anti-social behaviour, and problems associated with drugs, and we can often be seen out and about dealing with these issues.
“As a team, we place a strong emphasis on community engagement and collaborate closely with elected representatives, councillors, and local authority partners.
“I have identified key locations across the area and reintroduced Neighbourhood Watch schemes, monthly street engagement, and ward panel meetings, which can only bolster public confidence in policing.
“I am highly motivated and have a strong desire for the GMP to become a formidable force - to accomplish this, we must all be highly competent, motivated, and appreciative. I intend to accomplish this while occupying this position of responsibility.”
