This evening Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has authorised its third consecutive section 60 authority in the below defined areas of Hulme and Old Trafford in Manchester.
The section 60 powers under the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act will run for 24 hours from 20:13pm this evening (3 June 2023), and will finish at 20:13pm on 4 June 2023.
The section 60 authority - which grants officers extended powers to stop and search individuals within the defined area - has been introduced following recent incidents of violent crime in the past couple of weeks in the area and surrounding areas.
Since this latest authority was introduced two males have been arrested on suspicion of possessing bladed articles and weapons have been recovered. Highly visible patrols will continue in order to provide reassurance to the local communities.
Superintendent Muz Kernain of GMP's City Centre division, said: "In light of the latest arrests and given the number of high profile events taking place in the city of Manchester this evening, we are satisfied that a section 60 is proportionate and necessary to provide public reassurance and to keep people safe."
If you have any concerns, or you wish to report a crime, you can contact police online via www.gmp.police.uk or call 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
Details can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
