Man sentenced to 27 months for injuring a 5 month old baby

Today, Jack Hunt (16/05/1996) of Werneth Avenue, Hyde was sentenced to 27 months for unlawfully wounding a 5 month old baby.

On 9 January 2019, Hunt inflicted injuries on the baby consistent with having shaken her.

The baby was subsequently rushed to hospital and was found to have suffered serious injuries including bleeding in the brain. She remained in hospital for 5 weeks.

Hunt pleaded guilty to causing the injuries, however he maintained that he had done this accidentally when playing with the baby girl.

This explanation was disproven by expert medical evidence at a hearing on 31 March 2023, leading to the judge rejecting his explanation and stating there was no doubt the shaking was a deliberate act.

Detective Sergeant Abigail Thomas of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Hunt inflicted serious injuries on a defenceless baby, which resulted in CPR having to be carried out and left the baby with a bleed in the brain. Thankfully she has since made a good recovery.

“Hunt has refused to accept full responsibility for his actions, maintaining throughout that he caused the injuries accidentally, when medical evidence disproved this."
