Yesterday (Thursday 22 June 2023), two men appeared in Minshull Street Crown Court to be sentenced for their roles in a spate of violent robberies which occurred in Stockport in 2021.
Jama Ibrahim (01/01/1997) of Whitburn Avenue, Manchester pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and sentenced to 7 and a half years imprisonment.
Jama Ibrahim
A 26-year-old man pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal, and sentenced to an 18-month community order, having already served time on a tagged curfew.
In December 2021, Jama Ibrahim arranged to meet victims who were under the impression they were going to be buying and selling mobile phones or gaming consoles from Gumtree from locations across Stockport which were arranged online.
Members of the public would then meet with Jama Ibrahim to sell their items in good faith but were instead faced with Ibrahim, armed with a machete.
During one incident, a 21-year-old man was stabbed to the arm causing superficial injuries displaying unwavering violence.
Another man was also involved and pleaded guilty for the part he played, as he drove Ibrahim to the offence locations, to allow him to carry out these thefts. Through mobile phone investigation work, he was placed at the scenes of the robberies, with no explanation as to why he was there except for picking up Ibrahim after the incidents.
There was total of 5 incidents reported to police relating to robberies of a similar nature.
Police tracked Jama Ibrahim down and he was arrested on 18 November 2021 through mapping of his mobile phone numbers which led to his home address. During the arrest significant items of his were recovered and linked Ibrahim to the offences.
The other man was arrested on 1 December 2021 and the vehicle used to transport Ibrahim was seized for forensic recovery.
Detective Constable Rob Shakespeare of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: "These two men had a clear set-up, they planned their offences carefully and they continue to have no remorse for the victims, who were understandably traumatised by these incidents.
“The sentencing showcases the lengths we take to conclude an investigation and shows that no matter how organised or sophisticated the group or individual may be, we will thoroughly investigate and put offenders away in jail for a long time.
“I would like to thank the officers that contributed to the investigation over the last 2 years – their hard work and continued dedication has ensured that dangerous criminals are now off our streets as we worked hard to put together various pieces of evidence in order to build a timeline of events which would be strong enough to be able to charge Ibrahim and Hassan with the offences.
“I would like to take this opportunity to warn the public to be wary of unrealistically low prices, brand new accounts on second hand buying platforms and an insistence that any payment is always in cash and collection in person.
“If people do decide to go through with a sale avoid meeting the seller in unlit or remote areas, don’t go alone, and do not take the item directly.”
