Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has authorised the use of Section 60 powers across two areas in South of Manchester and one area in Stockport.
This section 60 order has been in place since yesterday evening (Wednesday 3 May) and has been extended by a further 12 hours and will now end at 08:15am on 5 May 2023.
Under Section 60, officers have extra powers to stop and search people in a defined area within a specific timeframe.
These temporary additional powers give officers extra powers to stop and search people in the area shown in the maps pictured below.
These powers have been implemented temporarily in response to recent incidents. Police are treating these as linked and targeted attacks and there is believed to be no threat to the wider community.
The incidents concerned are a firearms discharge that occurred in Burnage on 30 April 2023, and a series of arson attacks on 2 May.
GMP understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to residents, however, the use of these powers is only authorised when it is proportionate and necessary.
Officers out and about will continue to do all they can to keep you safe and will be on hand to offer any reassurance. Extra uniformed and non-uniformed officers have been deployed to the areas to support the investigation team and the community.
