Police are appealing for information after a burglary in Oakwood Road, Romiley at around 7.30pm on Thursday 28th September.
An 85-year-old woman was confronted in her house by a man, and was punched.
The victim is currently receiving treatment for her injuries, which fortunately are not thought to be serious.
The attacker is described as a male, around 5”11 inches tall and wearing dark clothing.
Detective Inspector Chris Aunins of Stockport CID said: “This is a truly shocking incident and our thoughts are with the victim as she recovers from this terrible ordeal.
“I want to provide some reassurance to the community that we’re doing all we can to identify this attacker and bring him to justice.
“We are pursuing active lines of enquiry and will add extra patrols to the Romiley area.
“Our aim is to prevent any further serious incidents going forward as our main priority is to keep the public safe.”
