On Wednesday 20 September 2023, police were made aware that Leigh Cenotaph on Church Street had been vandalised with graffiti.
It is believed the Cenotaph was damaged sometime around 4.20pm on Saturday 16 September.
Inspector Sam Davies of GMP’s Wigan Neighbourhood Team, said: “Understandably, this crime has caused an outcry within the local community and we are now in a position to appeal for the public’s help in providing any information they may have in order to help assist us with our enquiries which remain ongoing.
“Residents have been fully supportive and cooperative of our work to find those responsible, I want to stress that this investigation is in an early stage and we continue to appeal to anyone with information about those responsible for this crime to contact us in the first instance.
“Such mindless criminal damage will not be tolerated in our communities and our aim is to ensure those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
“Anyone with information should contact GMP via 101 quoting crime reference CRI/06LL/0029745/23, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
