GMP's Major Incident Team launched a murder investigation yesterday following the death of the 55-year-old woman on Pear Avenue in Bury.
Two people were initially arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault but have since been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody for questioning.
Police and NWAS were informed and attended the address around 9.30pm on Saturday 16 September 2023.
The woman was found unconscious and was taken to hospital for treatment on her injuries. Sadly, she passed away in hospital yesterday afternoon, Monday 18 September 2023, as a result of the injuries she sustained in the attack.
Officers are now appealing for anyone in the area at the time of assault, to come forward if they have information that can help.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Davis said: "This was a horrific, isolated attack that was carried out on a vulnerable 55-year-old and we have a number of lines of enquiry that we are currently following.
"We have two in custody but our investigation is still very much ongoing. We have increased, highly visible patrols in the community and they are there to speak to members of the community, to answer questions they may have.
"We are now in a position to appeal for anyone who was in the area of Pear Avenue in Bury on Saturday night, between 7pm and 9.30pm, who may have any dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage of the area to come forwards.
"If you can help, you can contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 quoting log number 3625 of 16/09/2023 or via the independent charity - Crimestoppers - on 0800 555 111.
