Attack filmed and posted on Snapchat of shop worker in Stockport results in jail sentence for one of those involved

Our detectives have successfully convicted a group of young men for their assault on a shop worker at a garage on Wellington Road South in Stockport.

Kausar Amin (31/12/2001) of Tate Street, Oldham was sentenced to two years in prison for the robbery and assault.

This was following a trial at Minshull Street Crown Court this week (Monday 22 April 2024). Two others, both 19-year-old men from Oldham were given suspended sentences with a further Bradley Maphosa (18/04/2004) of Middlewood Street, Salford being sent to a young offender institute for two years.

Taking place back in July 2021 in the early hours of the morning, a group of young men entered the store, forcing the door open after threatening behaviour in the forecourt. All of which was filmed on Snapchat and later accessed following their arrest which was cross-referenced with CCTV and used as evidence against them.

This was from a prior incident involving a robbery of e-cigarette liquid where one of the suspects left his mobile phone in the aftermath and later returned with friends resulting in the attack.

Charging towards the victim, the group then violently assaulted the man, by punching and stomping on him and throwing shop furniture at him forcefully. His injuries required medical treatment at the time.

They then fled the scene having caused excessive damage to the till area of the store, stealing a further £600 worth of stock.

After enquiries to locate and identify those responsible by our dedicated officers, with the help of the local community, following an appeal into the assault and theft from a shop they were later arrested and charged.

Detective Constable Lucy Williams of our Stockport district said; “After our detailed investigation into this incident, I’m glad we’ve managed to bring those people who took part in the unprovoked attack on a shop worker to justice.

“Their actions on that day were completely out of order and fuelled by rage over a minor incident where they went out with the intent to steal and ultimately cause harm.

“Hopefully, this will send a reminder to those who want to break the law that this will be not tolerated and provide some reassurance to shop workers that your safety and protection is important to us.

"We are determined to keep our local community safe from these kinds of incidents.

“The bravery of the victim and the support received was crucial to getting this result and I would also like to thank the public who helped us during our appeal process. The evidence gathered did help us bring these people in front of the courts and make sure they had to answer for their actions.”
