Earlier today at around 1:15pm (Friday 30 August 2024) our officers responded initially to a road traffic collision.
Following enquiries, it was established a 24 year old man was attacked prior to being hit by a vehicle whilst being chased by a group of males. He remains in hospital and his injuries are described as serious at this time.
A 31 year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following a road traffic collision and remains in custody for questioning.
Our dedicated local detectives are continuing to investigate and are actively seeking to trace and arrest other suspects.
A Section 60 has also been authorised across an area of Moston and Monsall, following this incident.
Under a Section 60, officers have extra powers to stop and search people in defined areas within a specific timeframe until just before 5pm on Saturday 31 August 2024.
These temporary powers will be enforced from now, overnight and throughout tomorrow and have been authorised as part of our policing response to keep communities safe to prevent further harm and any disorder.
Detective Inspector Paddy Connell from our City of Manchester North district said; “This incident, we strongly believe is targeted, will understandably cause concern in Manchester and happened in a busy shopping area, so we know there are key witnesses that saw what happened unfold.’’
“I would urge those people to contact us as soon as possible whilst we continue to investigate at pace the circumstances that led to this incident.
“Officers remain in the area to offer reassurance going into the evening and across the weekend, and in addition to this we have authorised additional powers for the next 24 hours to be able to stop and search people within the area detailed in Moston and Monsall where the incident happened. This allows us to keep residents safe and challenge anyone we believe is intent on committing further violence.
“We are keen to add to the evidence we have already obtained, specifically around witness statements in confidence, dashcam footage and any CCTV available. Despite the short time passed, we are making early progress and are determined to find all those responsible.
“Anyone with information around this incident that may help our enquiries is asked to call 101 quoting incident 1599 of 30/08/2024. Alternatively, you can pass on details to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously.”
