Santa's naughty list gets longer: 265 people arrested for drink and drug driving so far

During the first two weeks of our dedicated operation targeting drink and drug drivers, we have arrested 265 people.

Officers around the whole of Greater Manchester have taken a proactive approach to help prevent deaths and serious injury caused by motorists choosing to drive under the influence of drink and drugs.

Arrests have been made for those who chose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs and alcohol or for failing to provide a sample at the roadside. 

Roadside checks will continue to be carried across the festive period, with the operation running all the way through until the New Year.

There have been 131 drug driving offences, 109 drink driving offences and 30 failing to provide offences – this equates to 270 offences over a two-week period. The reason why this is slightly more than the arrest figure is because a suspect can get arrested for more than one offence.

As well as the enforcement side of the operation, we are speaking to the public and raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of drink and drugs.

Chief Inspector Michael Parker from our Special Operations Branch said: “Drink and drug driving isn't just about breaking the law – it's about shattering lives in an instant. One moment of poor judgment can transform families forever.

“A split-second decision to get behind the wheel while impaired can end in tragedy, leaving behind a devastating trail of grief, loss, and irreparable damage.

“A drink or drug driving conviction doesn't just impact the driver – it will have an impact on your future life. It can mean losing your job, destroying your career prospects, and leaving lasting emotional scars.

“The ripple effect of that single, reckless decision extends far beyond the moment of arrest or the potential crash. No social event or no celebration is ever worth risking innocent lives.”
