GMP Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit spring on two suspected burglars following burglary series in Heywood

Two suspected burglars were arrested by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit (TVIU) in Heywood.

TVIU officers were deployed to the Heywood area yesterday (23 February 2024) following reports of a series of burglaries that had taken place on 22 February and 23 February, between the hours of 10pm and 4am. Several vehicles were stolen as a result of the burglaries along with other personal possessions belonging to the victims, two of whom were elderly women.

After several hours patrolling the area, officers from the TVIU located one of the stolen vehicles and observed that two suspicious men were with it.

On seeing the TVIU officers, the two men attempted to escape but they were detained within a matter of seconds.

A 19-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary and they remain in police custody for questioning.

The stolen vehicle was recovered by the TVIU and will soon be returned to the victim.

Inspector Daniel Kabal of GMP Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit said: “This is a brilliant job by our officers, and I hope it demonstrates the great proactive work the team are engaged in to tackle burglary.

“Burglary has a huge impact on individuals and their communities, and we understand how disruptive and distressing this type of crime can be.

“I would like to reassure the public that our TVIU officers will continue to target those responsible for committing serious crime with the intention of sending them to prison, where they belong.

“GMP relies on intelligence to actively target those responsible, so I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of burglary to make a report to enable us to investigate.”
