A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after robbing a 54-year-old man in his own home.
The court heard how on Friday 21 April 2023, at around 9am, the victim was at home with a friend and the victim’s carer when the door knocked.
The victim opened the door and McDonagh – known to the victim – pushed through the door forcefully. The victim then began to run away from McDonagh and began to run up the stairs.
A few stairs up, the victim was grabbed with both hands by McDonagh and pulled back down the stairs and pushed the victim to the floor before stamping and kicking the victim.
During the altercation, McDonagh took £100 out of the victims’ pockets, and he and another male fled the scene leaving the victim with serious injuries included a femur which had been broken in half requiring surgery.
Following a comprehensive investigation by GMP’s City of Manchester North Neighbourhood Crime Team, officers arrested McDonagh on Tuesday 11 July 2023 and later charged on Thursday 13 July 2023.
Appearing at Manchester Crown Court, Robert McDonagh was sentenced for two robberies against the same victim.
Detective Constable Nick Kershaw of GMP’s City of Manchester North district said: "This was a despicable crime against a vulnerable man who was attacked in his own home. The victim in this case gained serious injuries requiring surgery and a lengthy hospital stay. The victim has been incredibly brave in coming forward and supporting our officers towards a prosecution. We wish to assure the public that Greater Manchester Police take all reports of robbery and burglary very seriously. The sentence has been a clear example of the dedication of our officers to secure a conviction against a violent individual and we will continue to support all victims to ensure they can begin to rebuild their lives after this terrifying incident."
