Work by Longsight’s neighbourhood team saw an incredible 80% reduction in callouts to a bail hostel which was causing a problem for local residents.
Officers had received numerous reports of a variety of criminality and offences at a bail hostel / halfway house on Daisy Bank Road: street drinking, ASB and noise issues, and fighting all occurred over several months.
After receiving the initial reports, local officers put a plan in place to tackle the problems and were determined to reduce the issues for those in the area.
Officers worked closely with local authorities and the community to ensure the best outcome for those involved, evicting multiple problem residents, rehousing them in different locations, and making multiple visits to the road to remind those staying there of their responsibilities.
Increased patrols to the area ensured a visible policing presence, deterring criminality and those out on the streets causing issues.
Subsequently, the robust plan by officers ensured a significant reduction in offences and callouts. The property saw 55 callouts in the July 1 to October 1 period – dropping to 11 between 1 October and 31 December.
Inspector Mark Cheston, from GMP’s City of Manchester district, said: “We are committed to tackling crime and whenever we are faced with situations like the one in Longsight, we work hard to ensure that the best plan is put in place to tackle the issue.
“PC Katie Llewellyn was instrumental in bringing about much of the work, and her and the wider neighbourhood team have done some great work in tackling the issue of anti-social problems at the hostel.
“In addition, by working closely with our partners in the council, we have been able to handle the issues in the appropriate way, which includes signposting and providing advice to those in need.
“We are continuing to work to tackle all ASB across the city and we work closely with communities to do this. If you have any information on any criminality in the area, then please don’t hesitate to contact us. You can report information online, via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or by visiting a local PACT meeting.”
