Section 60 powers extended in Failsworth and added to Limeside following altercation

A Section 60 Order has been extended in Failsworth and added to Limeside this evening (Tuesday 23 January 2024) following an altercation.

The Section 60 order was first imposed yesterday (Monday 22) just after 4pm following multiple reports of an altercation outside a supermarket on Ashton Road West.

Numerous reports stated that at least one of the group was thought to be in possession of a knife.

Officers quickly responded however most of the group had immediately dispersed. One teenager has been arrested in connection with the incident so far and has been released on bail.

A Section 60 Order is in place until midnight to give officers extra powers to stop and search individuals. The map below highlights the areas in which the powers are authorised, covering the entirety of Failsworth, Limeside and parts of Hollinwood.

Increased high visibility police presence can be expected in the local area.

Inspector Paul Giannasi of GMP’s Oldham District said; “The additional powers granted this evening demonstrate our robust and thorough approach to incidents of this nature.

“Although this is thought to be an isolated incident between groups known to one another, we understand the impact incidents like these can have on communities, particularly those just trying to go about their daily business. Thankfully no members of the wider public reported injuries.

“Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with officers out in the area, and we would ask anyone who has any information on Monday’s altercation, including knowing the identities of those involved, to contact GMP on 101 quoting log 2399 of 22/01/24.

“Any piece of information could assist officers as they progress the investigation.”
