Earlier today (Monday 15 January 2024) at around 10am, officers conducted an arrest on Thomson Street in the Edgeley area of Stockport.
With the dedicated neighbourhood team taking a proactive approach to a rise in reports of retail thefts, officers from the Central Neighbourhood Team were patrolling Stockport Town Centre utilising a variety of covert tactics.
A long-term suspect was spotted by an officer riding a bicycle and was subsequently detained. This was due to intelligence linking him to in excess of 25 shoplifting offences between October 2023 and January 2024 in the central area of Stockport.
The 34-year-old remains in custody for questioning.
Sergeant Gareth Davis of GMP’s Stockport district said; “We understand from listening and speaking to our local community that shoplifting is a key issue affecting shops in the area and we want to make sure we can keep both businesses and shoppers safe as well as providing a welcoming environment.
“We will continue to carry out our dedicated patrols to ensure we can deter any would-be criminals with rigorous policing in hotspot areas. It is not acceptable this type of crime and we will not tolerate it.
“Our ongoing works means we have a suspect in custody linked to recent offences in the area and we will be working hard to ensure justice is served.”
