We have authorised the extension of stop and search powers in the Hulme, Ardwick, Moss Side, Longsight and Gorton areas of Manchester after an incident which occurred at around 4pm on 5 July 2024. Officers received reports that a man had been attacked in Haymarket Street and suffered serious injuries. Detectives continue to investigate and enquiries are currently ongoing.
Section 60 powers under the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act were put in place yesterday evening and have now been extended and will run until 10.30am on Sunday 7 July.
Since the introduction of the powers yesterday evening, officers from our Transport Unit stopped a vehicle overnight on Princess Parkway in Moss Side, and arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of possession of offensive weapons– a knife and knuckle duster were also seized.

Superintendent Phil Spurgeon, said: “We don’t underestimate the seriousness of implementing Section 60 powers, it is not a decision that we take lightly, but we know that having these powers in place is having the impact we desire following an arrest was made in the Section 60 area after our Transport Unit stopped a vehicle.
"We are satisfied that it is necessary for us to continue with this authority to ensure our communities are kept safe.
"I would like to thank our local communities for their support since we introduced these powers, and I appeal to them to continue coming forwards with information that is allowing us to take action.
