At around 7pm, it is reported that a Mercedes travelling south-west along St Helen’s Road collided with a Nissan which was travelling in the opposing carriageway.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services, the passenger of the Nissan, a woman in her 60s, died from her injuries.
The driver of the Nissan remains in hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the Mercedes was also treated.
A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
