A section 60 has been authorised across Limeside and parts of Hollinwood in Oldham in response to reports of incidents involving threatening behaviour and weapons today.
The authority comes following reports of a group of men brandishing bladed weapons in the area around Hollins Road. No injuries were reported.
Subsequently, there was a report of a fight on Second Avenue in Oldham, although no injuries were reported. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Extra officers are currently patrolling the area for reassurance and to deter any further incidents.
Under Section 60, officers have extra powers to stop and search people in the above defined area within the specific times listed. It will be in place until 1.30am tomorrow morning (Monday 24 June 2024).
Inspector Katherine Murray, from GMP’s Oldham district, said: “The section 60 has been put in place following reports of people with weapons acting in a threatening way in the area – officers can utilise the extra powers to stop-search individuals and hopefully ensure some potentially deadly weapons are taken off the streets.
“Our investigation is currently ongoing in relation to both incidents and we would like to reassure the public that we are putting extra resources into the area to relieve any possible tensions.
“If you have any information about the incidents, please contact us on 101, or via gmp.police.uk. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. Always dial 999 in an emergency.”
