At around 3.40pm on Wednesday 6 March 2024, officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Halifax Road, Rochdale between a vehicle and pedestrian.
It is believed that a Land Rover Defender was travelling in a westerly direction along Halifax Road heading towards Rochdale town centre when the vehicle collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road.
The pedestrian, a 70-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries and sadly passed away from his injuries a short time later despite the best attempts of medical professionals.
The driver of the Land Rover, a 29-year-old man, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.
The man was interviewed by detectives and released under investigation pending further enquiries.
GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.
Detective Constable Carl Boydell from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) said; “Since we responded to this incident and initially appealed to the public shortly after, the pedestrian involved in this road traffic collision has now sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and friends at this time.
“We are continuing to investigate and are appealing to the local public once again to check to see if they have any footage or eyewitness accounts of what happened. This is to ensure we can complete all our enquiries and fully investigate the tragic circumstances of this collision, providing answers to the family and friends affected by the incident.
