From 8pm tonight (Monday 6 May 2024) until 4am tomorrow (Tuesday 7 May 2024), we have authorised the use of Section 60 and 60AA powers across the area outlined in the map below.
Under Section 60, officers have extra powers to stop and search people in a defined area within the specific times listed. Section 60AA allows us to require people to remove face coverings used to disguise / conceal their appearance.
This tactic has been introduced following a number of incidents of disorder overnight in the Royton area of Oldham, including reports of a group of men with weapons, and an incident which has left a man with life changing injuries.
Superintendent Phil Hutchinson of GMP Oldham District, said: “Our officers are conducting several enquiries, but I fully understand that the nature of these incidents and our increased presence in the community will spark some concern.
“Please be assured that we are working round the clock to ensure the safety of the local community and to do this we have increased visible officers across the district to provide added reassurance to the public. If you have any concerns, or would like to share some information with them, please do not hesitate to speak to them; they are there to help you.
“We have authorised a section 60 and 60AA which is highlighted in the map. Within this area we are able to stop and search anyone if we have reason to believe they are conducting criminal activities, carrying offensive weapons, or to direct them to remove face coverings.
“We will continue to have a presence in the area beyond the conclusion of the additional powers and I would like to thank the public for their support. Please continue coming forwards with information that will allow us to take action to keep our streets safe.
“We are keen to gather as much information as possible in relation these incidents and would encourage anyone who may have seen anything or have information concerning this to contact us by calling 101 and quoting log number 1242 of 06/05/2024.
"Alternatively, if you would prefer to remain anonymous, you can report information to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
