Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes has stepped in as Stockport’s newest District Commander. With extensive experience in investigating serious crime, he is committed to ensuring our Neighbourhood Teams remain victim-focused in their approach to prevent and fight crime.
Ch Supt Lewis Hughes joined GMP in 2003 and hasn’t looked back since. He brings an amplitude of knowledge and experience with him following his role as a Detective Superintendent in our Serious Crime Division where he managed multiple complex operations including the murder investigation into Stuart Everett earlier this year.
After a torso was discovered in Kersal Dale woodlands Ch Supt Hughes led an extensive investigation spanning over four months where a multitude of specialist resources were deployed to search in locations across Salford, Manchester and Bury. Through his tenacity and strong leadership, we were able to identify the victim at the centre of this tragic case and are closer to getting justice with two individuals charged with his murder.
Ch Supt Hughes has spent the majority of his career in crime and intelligence posts which has solidified his belief in certifying that victims remain at the forefront of his mind during every step of an investigation. This experience gives him a strong grip on the skills needed to manage large teams during challenging circumstances and set a clear direction and purpose.
Additionally, Ch Supt Lewis Hughes is dedicated to further strengthening Stockport’s Neighbourhood team, with a specific focus on anti-social behaviour. This aligns with Chief Constable Stephen Watson’s commitment to going ‘back-to-basics’ as it further emphasises officers proactively preventing and fighting crime.
Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes said: “I am excited to work alongside the excellent team at Stockport to ensure that we leave every situation knowing we have made a positive difference. It is vital we create a safe and secure environment for the public to go about their day with confidence.
“I firmly believe that focusing our efforts on reaching the greatest outcome for the public encourages officers to be the absolute best they can be for our community. I am working with partners to address concerns unique to our area and reach solutions which maintain the safety of those in Stockport.
“In policing we are often called during the most distressing times of people’s lives, and it is important we remember that everything we do comes back to a victim, who comes to us in their hour of need. Providing a caring response and supporting victims while we investigate crime is fundamental.
“I will strive to ensure that policing is fair and effective, with a strong commitment to officers being out and about, engaging with the public and showing they are there to make a positive impact on the community.”
